National Trust Plotting To Save Abbey Road Studios

18 февраля 2010 года
National Trust Plotting To Save Abbey Road StudiosThe National Trust has said it may launch a bid to save Abbey Road if the famous recording studios are put up for sale.

On Tuesday, it was claimed that cash-strapped owner EMI was looking to offload the property in St John's Wood.

Although unconfirmed, the report prompted listeners of Chris Evans' Radio 2 breakfast show and 5 Live to contact the Trust about purchasing the building.

In a statement, the charity told the BBC that "if there is enough momentum, we may launch a campaign to save the studios".

A spokesman said: "It's not often that the public spontaneously suggests that we should acquire a famous building.

"However, Abbey Road recording studios appear to be very dear to the nation's heart - to the extent that we will take soundings as to whether a campaign is desirable or even feasible."

The National Trust owns a number of historic buildings across the UK, including the childhood homes of Beatles stars Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon.

The Liverpool group were one of the most prolific users of Abbey Road, which is thought to be worth as much as £30million.

On Wednesday, Sir Paul said he was hopeful that a deal could be reached to save the recording studios.
