There's not a lot to say
When you're feeling this way
And you don't listen anyway
You've got your own problems
But listen to me, just this time
It's something yours and it's something mine
We must be close to the end of the line
Let's try and get there together
She said you have to learn she said
To find somewhere outside of your head
I said that would be fine I said
But I'd rather be with you instead
'Cause when you're up they'll love you to death
When you're down they'll steal your last breath
They say goodbye and you say hello
They say how are you but you just don't know

There must be something in between
My baby whispered with a scream
I swear I'll never ever dream again
So back into the stream she slips
Our magic still between her lips
Her step is sure she never trips again
I don't know why we still pretend
Except to make it to the end
And you like me must want a friend somewhere
She said that love's a luxury
And it was never meant to be
A simple thing to share with me at all
She said that anything so bright
Could never possibly be right
And so encourages the night, to win
I don't know why we still pretend
Except to make it to the end
And you like me must need a friend somewhere

If I sing something blue
Dedicated to you
Don't believe that I'm sad
Oh no I'm only dreaming
And the taste of your kiss
I remember and miss
But at least now I know
What it's like to have kissed you
And if you feel any pain
In this sleepy refrain
It's only my imagination

There goes Johnny he looks like death
It's a major achievement just to take a breath
He went to paradise he got bored
Even fell off his girlfriend
It doesn't pay to think
Well there goes Jenny she's dressed in black
Tried to go somewhere had to turn back
She broke the contract she broke the rules
This time she's really going
It doesn't pay to think
You can reach inside your mind
But the only thing you'll find
Is that you're dumb deaf and blind just like the rest
And the answers that you need
Are in a language you can't read
And you know you must get free from this curse
But it just gets worse and worse and worse
There goes Suzy she looks so cute
All dressed up in her birthday suit
She saw it coming she watched it go
She went out blowing bubbles
Bye Suzy

I'm sitting here picking the holes in my sneakers
Watching the moves of those midnight creepers
There's a smell of a song, rustling through my head
Something about being somewhere else instead
And the ghost train comes blowing on in, through this town
Picking up the passengers then putting them down
And the wind steals a leaf, like the ghost of a thief
And the autumnal wind blows around and around
Oh those horses of smoke sneaking in through the trees
There's a shaking and a shuddering that goes to my knees
And I wonder what's happening, did I miss the joke
Another year sleeping I never awoke
There was plenty war and plenty of death
Plenty of hunger and wasting of breath
And all I did was scratch myself and dream a few dreams
And I wrote a few notes on what I think it all means
But reading them all now they don't amount to much
There's no meat to eat no flesh to touch
A few dreams of you and a few fish to fry
I just sat there watching another year go by
Oh those horses of smoke sneaking in through the trees
There's a shaking and a shuddering that goes to my knees
And I wonder what's happening, did I miss the joke
Another year sleeping I never awoke

Radio's playing the blues
Somebody's making the news
And I'm rolling along
In the way that I do saying
I don't depend on you.
Hearing the words that you say
Watching you walking away
Telling myself I'm just feeling blue and
I don't depend on you.
Now you're over there
All alone in your chair
While I'm over here drinking wine
And I'm asking the sky
Won't you please tell me why
That woman could never be mine.
It's getting late by now
I've got to keep moving somehow
Telling myself I'm just feeling blue and
I don't depend on you.

You lie sleeping all warm
I'm here waiting in the storm
Waiting for the time to come when I can come in
And make sweet love to you till I have to go again.
I've been waiting for hours
I've been through snowstorms and showers
Waiting for the lights to fade and your parents go to sleep
Then just like a randy cat into your bed I'll creep.
Yes I remember your smell
Yes I remember, remember it well
Strange kind of animal music in the night
Crazy feeling, I just can't explain it right.
So I send you these words
Let them flutter 'round like birds
Times are changed and rearranged but something lingers on
I still remember you, that's why I wrote this song.

M 16 M 16
You're the king that needs no queen
You came to me from somewhere high
A magic wand for a poor G.I.
I spent the best years of my life
With a submachine gun for my wife
M 16 M 16
Shoots those bullets fast and clean
When I hear a stranger blink
I can shoot ten rounds before I think
M 16 you're so clean
I spent the best years of my life
With a submachine gun for my wife
M 16 you're so clean
M 16 M 16
You're the king that needs no queen you're so clean
You came to me from somewhere high
A magic wand for a poor G.I. you're so clean
Obscene!

Sometimes I live in the country
Sometimes I live in the town
Sometimes I have a great notion
To jump in the river and drown
Irene goodnight Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
Maybe a change in the weather
Maybe a change in the sea
Maybe a change in you my love
But there'll never be a change in me
Irene goodnight Irene goodnight
Goodnight Irene goodnight Irene
I'll see you in my dreams
